Traveller reviews in Zadar

Our guide, Luca ,was great: knowledgeable, attentive, flexible and very enjoyable company. She arranged for our tour to start earlier and adapted to a last minute request to visit the ancient glass museum. We finished with a private visit to Wine Garden where the lovely host explained the nature of the charcuterie that we ate as well as the wine and special cherry liqueur. We came from Split for this tour and it was well worth it!

Zadar Shore Excursion
Our family of 4 had a great time with Mirko. He was very kind and very knowledgeable. Not only did he take us to the Krka waterfalls, but he explained many interesting facts along the way and pointed out a lot of wildlife that we would have missed otherwise. He took us to a great restaurant for lunch where we could try some local food. He also found a coffeee shop for us in Zadar, at our request. Thanks to Mirko, we had a wonderful day in the Zadar area! We highly recommend booking with Mirko!

Excursion from Zadar: Krka Waterfalls and Zadar or Sibenik city tour (or visit Winery)
Fantastic tour with a fantastic guide. Her education as an art historian was much appreciated as she provided so much fascinating information about the places we visited. The visit to the vineyard, and our time to chat, was much appreciated too. I highly recommend Luca.

More ways to experience Zadar

Zadar's sensory tapestry comes alive when you explore its ancient cobblestone streets. Chart a path that introduces you to both famed sights like the Sea Organ and lesser-known locales such as the quaint cafes in Petar Zoranić Square. The range of things to do in Zadar extends from its pulsating piazzas to the serenity of its sun-drenched vineyards, telling tales of resilience and romance. Engage with Zadar’s seasonal festivals, lose yourself in an adventure at the Plitvice National Park, or embrace the slow rhythm of a city that still resonates with the echoes of history.

Explore Zadar off the beaten path

explore city off the beaten path: Follow quiet lanes and short boat rides to uncover alternative things to do, trading crowded icons for small rituals, local flavors, and easy moments that feel personal.

Cultural experiences: Ride with the barkajoli across Jazine harbor, then slip into the morning fish market by the City Market halls to watch bargaining over tuna and sardines. Around noon, tuck into marenda at Konoba Skoblar beside the Land Gate—grilled squid, greens, and a carafe poured without fuss.

Small museums and galleries: Watch glassblowing at the Museum of Ancient Glass and clink a tiny ampoule you made yourself. Step into the Benedictine Convent of St. Mary for the Gold and Silver of Zadar, where reliquaries glow in a quiet side room. Check what’s on at the Rector’s Palace; rotating shows and chamber concerts rarely draw big crowds.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Climb into Queen Jelena Madijevka Park and pause on the terrace above Five Wells Square in late afternoon. For sunset with space to breathe, ferry to Preko on Ugljan and hike or drive up to Kamenjak.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: Pick up Paški sir at the Gligora Cheese & Deli shop and ask for a tasting of different ages. At the Maraska store, choose a bottle of Maraschino and the bitter Pelinkovac locals order after dinner. For olive oil and fig jam, browse the City Market stalls in late morning, then have them wrap bottles for your bag.

Popular neighbourhoods

Unfolding the distinct character of a city often lies within its neighbourhoods, and Zadar is no exception. Each area has its unique charisma and tells a different chapter of Zadar's vibrant story.

Old Town: Traverse the cobblestone streets of Old Town with its Roman ruins and medieval churches. Be charmed by the harmony of ancient and contemporary art like the Sea Organ that produces melody with sea waves.

Riva: Stroll along Riva, the city's vibrant waterfront promenade. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and taste of local cafés, while gazing at boats bobbing in the glistening Adriatic Sea.

Borik: Lounge on the pebbly beaches of Borik, a serene neighbourhood known for its tourist resorts. Experience serenity with the backdrop of pine trees under the cerulean sky.

Kolovare: Splash in the crystal-clear waters of Kolovare, a popular beach hub. Feel the warm sand beneath your toes as you soak up the sun or enjoy a sunset picnic.

Diklo: Cycle through the quiet streets of Diklo, an enchanting residential area. Catch breathtaking views of the islands and the azure sea, with the Velebit Mountains in the distance.

Things to do in Zadar by season

Spring: Wander the Roman Forum and quiet cobblestone lanes in mild sunshine, then slip out to the islands for wildflowers and easy walks that suit kids and seniors alike. Sail calm channels toward Kornati or kayak along the coast as cafés reopen and markets pile up with asparagus and strawberries.

Summer: Swim off city beaches, island-hop to Dugi Otok for sandy coves, and time sunset by the Sea Organ as the promenade fills with street performers. Snorkel in clear shallows great for families, or charter a small boat to find sea caves and empty bays for a more private day.

Fall: Follow grape and olive harvests in the Ravni Kotari hinterland, taste new vintages with food lovers, and hike Paklenica’s quieter trails under sharp blue skies. Warm seas still invite a final swim, while couples and seniors linger over long lunches in stone-walled villages.

Winter: Settle into cosy konobas during crisp bura days, stroll lantern-lit streets during Advent, and browse small museums without the rush. Watch glassy sunsets on the Riva and take gentle day trips to salt pans and bird-rich wetlands when the air is clear.

Annual rhythms bring Zadar’s Full Moon Night in July, when the waterfront glows with lanterns and traditional boats, and the summertime Millennium Jump, a joyful plunge off the promenade. Come winter, Advent markets and Night of Museums brighten short days with open-air music, heritage displays, and warm maraschino in hand.
