If I could leave a higher rating, I would. Lores was such an amazing guide for my family of 3. She made things so interesting that even my 14 year old daughter enjoyed all of the history she gave us. Lores is incredibly knowledgeable about Tarragona's history and also the surrounding area's history. She is exceptionally kind and also very witty. She made all of us laugh quite a bit. I highly recommend Lores to families looking for the perfect guide and individuals as well.

Tarragona, Gate of the Roman Empire, Half Day Tour
Our half-day tour with Lores was one of the best we’ve ever been on! Her local and historical knowledge of Tarragona was great. Her explanations of how things came to change throughout the history of the region was extremely interesting. She was very cordial and aware of my mobility issues and paced the tour perfectly. We have used TBL in many countries around the world. Lores is in the top 1% of all those guides used in the pasr

More ways to experience Tarragona

At the first whiff of Tarragona, you can almost hear the echoes of the ancient past, where the Romans ruled, and history set its roots deep. It isn't just a city; it's a living snapshot of times gone by. Yet, the list of things to do in Tarragona doesn't stop at aging ruins. Fresh clamp setup in local market squares, flaming sunset views from Balcón del Mediterráneo, and the exhilarating whispers of a local fiesta keep the city's pulse racing. Unearth these layers of Tarragona, inviting you to explore both its old charm and vibrant, ongoing symphony of life.

Explore Tarragona off the beaten path

Move past the big Roman highlights toward alternative things to do, where neighborhoods, workshops, and sunlit corners slow you down and make room for small discoveries.

Cultural experiences: Drop by Colla Jove’s rehearsal hall off Cós del Bou on an evening practice night to watch human-tower builders warm up and stack. Stroll El Serrallo at dusk to see fishermen mending nets, then sip a simple vermut at a bar along Moll de Pescadors.

Small museums and galleries: Step through creaking floors at Casa Castellarnau to peek at painted ceilings and a gentleman’s study. Nearby, Casa Canals shows elegant rooms and a quiet backyard where music sometimes drifts. Down on the waterfront, the Port Museum lines up model ships and stories of the harbor without the crowds.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Start early at the Les Ferreres Aqueduct (Pont del Diable) and stand on the stones in calm morning light. Later, find the tree-lined terraces of the Cementiri de Tarragona or the clifftop path through the Bosc de la Marquesa for soft, late-afternoon sea views.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: Go mid-morning to Mercat Central for romesco, olives, and wedges of garrotxa cheese. Pick up a bottle of DO Tarragona wine or local vermut from a small bodega on Rambla Nova. In El Serrallo toward evening, grab tins of mussels or salted tuna from shops along Moll de Pescadors to take home.

Popular neighbourhoods

Nothing allows you to feel the real pulse of a city better than exploring its neighbourhoods. So, let's dive into the journey through Tarragona's most vibrant areas.

Old Town: Saunter through narrow cobblestone streets of this medieval neighbourhood, surrounded by ancient Roman ruins and Gothic architecture.

Rambla Nova: Enjoy shopping extravaganzas and culinary delights in this modern area, famous for its bustling shops and high-end restaurants.

El Serrallo: Experience the charm of this traditional fishing district, adorned with colourful houses and numerous fish markets.

Roman Amphitheatre Area: Relish the historic grandeur while wandering around the site of gladiatorial battles, concerts and circuses from the Roman era.

Miracle Beach: Sunbathe and relax on the golden sand of this stunning beach, offering splendid views of the Mediterranean.

Things to do in Tarragona by season

Spring: Trace Roman stones in soft light and linger over long lunches as orange blossoms scent the Rambla. Sant Jordi in April covers stalls with books and roses, a gentle prelude to what many consider the best time to visit Tarragona.

Summer: Swim before the sun peaks, then slip into shady plazas as the Mediterranean hums. Things to do in Tarragona in summer include sandy beach days, fireworks by the sea in early July, and evenings when castells teams rehearse in neighbourhood squares.

Fall: Join September’s Santa Tecla festivities for parades, human towers, and correfocs that spark through the old town. Cooler days invite winery forays into nearby Priorat and Montsant, with seniors and couples enjoying relaxed tastings.

Winter: Walk quiet ramparts and Roman amphitheatre terraces without the heat, then tuck into calçots with romesco in season. Christmas in Tarragona brings nativity scenes, markets, and the Three Kings parade lighting up January nights.

Year after year, Tarraco Viva in May animates ancient history with reenactments, Santa Tecla crowns September with music and castells, and the summer fireworks competition paints the waterfront. Carnival livens February, keeping the calendar busy well beyond beach season.
