Biarritz & the Basque Country Sightseeing: Drive along the Atlantic coast and into the Pyrenees
We did this the day after arriving. It was a perfect way to get to know the city, and figure out what we wanted to do the rest of our visit. Iker was fantastic!!! He is unbelievably knowledgeable and personable. He will teach you not only about the history of the city in terms of facts, but also the context about what those facts/events mean to the culture and people of the area. And he will make sure you know where to eat, drink and avoid during your visit. He is the best!!!!

More ways to experience San Sebastian

This colourful city of San Sebastian caters to every kind of traveler. Looking for things to do in San Sebastian? Consider strolling through old neighbourhoods, rich with tradition and local tales. Sample diverse culinary expressions, visit top attractions steeped in history or explore the less-trodden paths for a touch of the extraordinary. Seasons here bring unique blend of celebrations, flavours, and colours, each leaving you with a deeper understanding of this spirited city's fabric. San Sebastian doesn’t just invite you to observe, but to dive headfirst into its ever-vibrant life.

Explore San Sebastian off the beaten path

Step off the pintxo trail and slow down, with alternative things to do that mix seaside walks, neighborhood culture, and evenings that locals actually linger over.

Cultural experiences: Slip into Atano III Frontón for an evening pelota match, where the crack of the ball echoes under the rafters. In txotx season, bus out to Petritegi in Astigarraga for cider drawn straight from the barrel and a hearty late dinner.

Small museums and galleries: Duck into the small Museo Naval by the port to trace whaling voyages and boatbuilding. Across the river, Kubo Kutxa shows rotating contemporary art inside the Kursaal’s sea-facing corner. For film and edgy exhibits, ride up to Tabakalera and roam the free galleries before an early evening screening.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Follow the Paseo de Ulia in late afternoon for cliffside views of the Cantabrian and Zurriola’s surf far below. As the day fades, lean on the Sagues seawall to watch longboarders ride last waves under a pink sky.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: Browse Mercado de San Martín in the late morning for Idiazabal cheese, guindillas, and tins of bonito you can tuck into a tote. Stop at Aitor Lasa Gastronomía on Aldamar for seasonal mushrooms, local honey, and a wedge cut to order. If the waves call you, Pukas Surf Shop near Zurriola has Basque-shaped boards, tees, and small items that travel well.

Popular neighbourhoods

Exploring San Sebastian opens up a mosaic of unique neighbourhood experiences. Each district invites you to delve into its distinct atmosphere and discover what makes this city truly special.

Old Town: Embrace Spanish life while meandering through narrow, winding streets filled with vibrant Basque pintxos bars and charming boutiques.

La Concha: Meander along the crown jewel of San Sebastian, the sweeping sandy beach surrounded by belle époque buildings and vibrant sidewalk cafés.

Gros: Get your surfing fix or simply watch the crashing waves at Zurriola beach, a well-loved spot amongst the local surfer crowd.

Antiguo: Visit the old town boasting quaint shops and bars. After sunset, chic cocktail bars light up the streets, infusing the neighborhood with a vibrant nightlife.

Mount Igueldo: Enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city from this hill, ventured by funicular or foot. Savour a local ice-cream while basking in the scenic vistas.

Things to do in San Sebastian by season

Spring: Stroll La Concha promenade under fresh greenery, split the first anchovies of the season in pintxo bars, and watch surfers from Zurriola. Families and seniors find gentle temperatures for seaside walks.

Summer: Make a day of the beaches, then catch free Jazzaldia sets on Zurriola in July and nightly fireworks during Aste Nagusia in August. Long twilights suit pintxo crawls and balcony views for luxury stays.

Fall: Line the bay for the La Concha rowing regattas in early September, hike Monte Urgull in crisp air, and find mushrooms and cider shaping menus. Couples enjoy quieter sands and scenic overlooks.

Winter: Hear Tamborrada’s drums roll through the Old Town each January, browse festive lights in December, and watch powerful winter swells from safe viewpoints. Cider houses nearby open for hearty, sociable meals.

Plan around Tamborrada on 20 January, July’s Jazzaldia with open-air concerts, August’s Semana Grande fireworks, and the La Concha regattas that transform the waterfront into a grandstand.
