Private Shore Excursion from Ha Long Bay Port: Explore Hanoi’s Historic Sites, Cultural Highlights & Local Flavors
Thuyet was fantastic! He met us at the cruise ship and walked us to the boat that was near by on the pier. He had our passes ready. We were so grateful to have a boat all to ourselves that would usually have about 50 people. He toured us through the cave that was impressive. The food was fantastic and kept coming out of the kitchen. We had to say we are stuffed. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend Thuyet and having a private boat for Halong Bay.

Ha Long Bay Shore Excursion Tour
Rose is very professional, punctual, and thorough as a tour guide. My tour of Ha Long Bay exceeding my expectations. She is very knowledgeable of the area and its history. She took care of all the detail and I had absolutely nothing to do but enjoy the tour. In addition to being a tour guide, she is a chef. She knows the great places to eat. She is very respectful of her clients and also fun to be with. I recommend her highly!

More ways to experience Halong

The majestic landscape of Halong is a patchwork of azure waters and towering limestone islets, creating a symphony of natural wonders. Exploring the things to do in Halong would reveal the mysteries of this UNESCO Heritage Site, from navigating the emerald waters in a traditional junk boat to exploring uncharted caves. With each passing season, Halong transforms offering new delights, and when the sun goes down, the bay sparkles beneath a jewel-studded sky. Experience the magic of local life in floating villages, tasting the freshness of the catch of the day. Halong isn't a simple visit; it's an immersion into enchantment.

Explore Halong off the beaten path

If you're craving alternative things to do, wander beyond the main bay cruises and poke around quiet corners where locals shop, pray, and catch the day’s breeze.

Cultural experiences: At first light, join retirees stretching and walking the shoreline on Bãi Cháy Beach, then drift through Chợ Cái Dăm as hot chả mực patties hit the griddle. Around 9am, slip into Long Tiên Pagoda beneath its stone gate and watch neighbors light incense before work.

Small museums and galleries: Step into Quảng Ninh Museum and head straight for the coal-mining displays and the quiet top-floor room on ethnic textiles. If you’re out on the water, the Tùng Sâu Pearl Farm’s little workshop shows grafting tools and shells, with staff explaining the process. Back in town, the Library next door often hosts small photo exhibits, calm and cool in late afternoon.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Toward sunset, stroll the pocket parks along Trần Quốc Nghiễn coastal road on the Hòn Gai side; the benches face limestone silhouettes without the tour crowds. After golden hour, walk the pier at Cảng tàu khách quốc tế Hạ Long or the breakwater at Tuần Châu Marina and watch the boats idle in.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: Hit Chợ Hạ Long 1 in the morning for dried squid and a warm bag of chả mực—ask for vacuum sealing if you’re traveling on. Later, browse the OCOP Quảng Ninh Center near the museum for local teas and miến dong glass noodles. After lunch, compare designs at the Hạ Long Pearl showroom in Bãi Cháy and choose a small piece you can actually wear.

Popular neighbourhoods

Peel back the layers of Halong's character by exploring its vibrant neighbourhoods. Each has a unique personality, offering a distinct experience for curious travellers.

Bai Chay: Stroll along the bustling seafront, soaking up the energy from lively markets and seafood restaurants. The sparkling night scene of illuminated restaurants and karaoke bars provides a vibrant contrast to the day's tranquil beach visits.

Tuan Chau: Charter a traditional junk boat and bask in the stunning view of the emerald waters and the hundreds of limestone islands jutting out of the sea. Tuan Chau's maritime theme park offers an added zest of amusement.

Hon Gai: Delve into the area's cultural spirit by visiting the Long Tien pagoda, the largest in Halong. Don't miss the chance to sample authentic Vietnamese cuisine at the bustling local markets.

Halong Marina: Treat yourself to a luxury shopping experience under the neon lights. Nightfall breathes new life into the Marina, with the ferris wheel and the waterfront promenade radiating bright, inviting colours.

Cai Dam: Recharge your energy in the peaceful charm of this lesser-visited neighbourhood. Treasure the moments of simple joy in seeing the local kids returning from school or fishermen docking their boats.

Things to do in Halong by season

Spring: Drift through Halong’s limestone maze under a soft mist, when seas are calmer and temperatures stay gentle. Paddle to hidden lagoons, step into cool caverns, and watch floating villages ease into the day as night squid boats still head out after dusk.

Summer: Swim off quiet coves and kayak beneath sunlit cliffs, then retreat during midday heat while brief squalls pass. Expect busier bays on local holiday weeks, with families splashing ashore and sunset sails turning the water gold.

Fall: Find the clearest skies and smoothest cruising, a favourite window for photographers and couples eyeing a private deck to themselves. Trek viewpoints for wide panoramas and linger over seafood in the soft evening air.

Winter: Wake to ethereal fog and crisp mornings that thin into bright, crowd-free afternoons. Layer up on deck, warm hands around hot tea, and try night squid fishing when the season peaks.

Halong Carnival rolls out in late spring with street parades, music, and waterfront fireworks in Ha Long City. Lanterns and mooncakes colour Mid-Autumn nights in Hon Gai, while nearby Cua Ong and Yen Tu temples host long-running spring festivals that fill the province with pilgrims.
