D-Day represented the opening act of Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious operation in history and has often been described as having been the real turning point of the war in the West. This guided tour of the D-Day beaches offers you a detailed and immersive experience, providing historical context, personal stories, and the opportunity to visit significant sites related to the American role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. This is also a hands-on experience which will enable you explore remnants of the German fortifications and step on the 'traumatized sands' of Omaha and Utah beach! -Pick-up at hotel/train-station in Bayeux; -Our tour of the American sectors will include: *Sainte Mere Eglise, the very first town liberated by American forces on D-Day; *Utah Beach, the westernmost sector of the assault area and the beach with the fewest casualties; *Brecourt Manor, site of the four-gun battery taken out by Lt. Winters and his men (depicted in the Band of Brothers) *Pointe du Hoc, one of the most iconic Normandy landmarks, scene of a remarkable display of bravery on the part of members of 2nd US Rangers. [quick lunch break] *Omaha Beach and 'Dog Green' sector, the section of the beach with the highest casualty rate in the morning of June 6 (depicted in Saving Private Ryan) *Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, final resting place for over 9, 300 American dead -Drive back to Bayeux Please note that all special requests concerning the itinerary, duration, etc. , are supposed to be discussed and agreed upon prior to the tour
