The violent interaction between ice and fire shapes the South Coast of Iceland. The black sand was brought down from the mountains during catastrophic floods of melted water from volcanic eruptions under the glaciers. I believe that understanding Icelandic geology will enhance your enjoyment of the trip through this fantastic landscape, and I will do my best to explain it. Many of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls will be on our way, falling from ancient sea cliffs when the sea level was several meters higher than it is today. We will visit an outlet glacier and spectacular rock formations, and in the summertime, look for puffins. Bonus: During the wintertime, when we have a chance to see the Northern Lights and the conditions are favourable, we can step out of the street lights in Reykjavik for 2 hours and try to spot them.
We drive east from Reykjavik, passing through the towns of Hveragerði and Selfoss and then on to Hella and Hvolsvöllur, with possible short stops along the way. Our first main stop is Seljarlandsfoss waterfall. In the summertime, we can walk behind it and maybe get a little wet. It's good to bring a raincoat. We pass by the famous Eyjafjallajökul Volcano before arriving at Skógarfoss, the mighty waterfall. There, we will have lunch at a nice restaurant and maybe hike up the 440 steps to the top of the waterfall. Sólheimajökull outlet glacier is our next stop, and taking a short walk on the glacier is possible. At Dyrhólaey rock formations (the southeast spot of Iceland) and Reynisfjara black beach, we might see the big Atlantic waves and the Puffins in the summertime. Vík, the small town isolated out there, is where we turn back for home.
