What travellers say

Traveller reviews in Copenhagen
4.9
(2018)
Michael is very knowledgeable, I was able to achieve most of the items on my check list although of limited time frame as I was travelling back the same day. In addition we had stopped on some additional nice spots I wasn't aware about. But Michael as an experienced local guide was able to add a cultural dimension to the trip which is very rare to be gained with any other guide. Also not to forget his very nice and comfortable transportation vehicles.

Castle and History Private Car Tour of Northern Copenhagen
Ivan was friendly considerate and very informative about Copenhagen, we learned a lot from him about history and the culture. He was nice to talk to and we enjoyed the tour with him. He also gave us tips on what to do in Copenhagen and he suggested a good lunch for us. He made us comfortable and I will recommend his tour highly

A perfect day in Copenhagen pampering all your senses
Caroline speaks perfect English. Her husband is a chef in a prominent local restaurant so she lives and breathes food 24/7. We were delighted with the broad survey of food we experienced during our tour It was great fun to visit the oldest cheese store in Copenhagen, chat with the owner and get an introductory Danish cheese tasting experience. We also lunched at a very "hip" Danish restaurant featuring modern open face sandwiches. The pastries and candies were special. We highly recommend Caroline.

More ways to experience Copenhagen

Imagine peacefully cruising down the winding canals of Copenhagen, the city vividly alive with rustic charm and Scandinavian elegance. In vibrant neighbourhoods, the hum of daily life meets the soft murmur of history, offering a plethora of things to do in Copenhagen. 'Tis a city punctuated by seasons, each unveiling a unique shade of beauty, from sunlit summer walks to cozy winter "hygge". Here, the offbeat path stands shoulder-to-shoulder with classical attractions, both beckoning explorers to delve deeper into Denmark's capital allure.

Explore Copenhagen off the beaten path

Want to slip past the crowds? Let’s duck into local spots where you can slow down and see how Copenhagen really moves.

Cultural experiences: Grab a seat at Absalon on Sønder Boulevard for the 6 pm communal dinner—long tables, easy conversation, and a warm local vibe. Earlier, step into the calm light of Grundtvig’s Church in Bispebjerg or wander Assistens Kirkegård in Nørrebro to see how Copenhageners take a quiet pause.

Small museums and galleries: Peek into Medical Museion on Bredgade for old operating rooms and curious medical tools you won’t find elsewhere. Head to Cisternerne under Søndermarken, where art installations live in a cool, echoing former reservoir. Then cross to Overgaden in Christianshavn for fresh, experimental shows; go late morning on a weekday and you might have the galleries to yourself.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Ride up to Konditaget Lüders in Nordhavn around golden hour and watch cranes, harbor, and rooftops turn gold. Or take in a wide city sweep from Bellahøj Bakke, then walk the public roof trail at CopenHill in early evening when the breeze drops and the lights flick on.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: On Jægersborggade, visit Keramiker Inge Vincents for paper-thin porcelain, then watch caramel pulling at Karamelleriet and fill a bag to go. Swing by Designer Zoo on Vesterbrogade to meet makers and pick up small-batch ceramics or woodwork that packs easily. For edible takeaways, grab freshly roasted beans at Coffee Collective on the same street, or cans to-go from BRUS on Guldbergsgade for a taste of local craft beer later.

Popular neighbourhoods

The true character of Copenhagen pulses through its varied neighbourhoods where culture, history, and charm coexist. These areas allow travellers to taste the city's vibrant life, each offering its own version of Danish delight.

City Center: Lose yourself in Copenhagen's heart where stunning royal palaces and imposing government buildings stand erect. Experience the hustle of urban living, infused with Danish traditions.

Nyhavn: Indulge your senses in the wonderfully vivid atmosphere, where colourful townhouses and sparkling waterways create a picturesque scene. The soothing sound of lapping waves against old wooden boats becomes your soundtrack in this waterside quarter.

Vesterbro: Find the city's cool, creative vibe in former working-class district turned hipster haven. Vintage shops, art studios, and organic food markets offer a vibrant blend of style and bohemian comfort.

Christianshavn: Traverse the network of cobble-stoned streets and canals that defines this neighbourhood. Between waterfront cafes and bohemian boutiques, it's a treat for anyone seeking serenity amidst urban vibrancy.

Nørrebro: Treat yourself to a multicultural experience in this diverse neighbourhood. Resplendent with vibrant street art, flea markets full of treasures, and an eclectic food scene, it’s a sensory feast for avid explorers.

Things to do in Copenhagen by season

Spring: Cycle quiet streets to watch cherry blossoms blush at Bispebjerg Cemetery and along Langelinie, then linger by canal-side cafés as terraces reopen. Cooler days suit families and seniors, with museums and design galleries pleasantly uncrowded.

Summer: Swim in harbour baths at Islands Brygge, drift past colourful facades on a private canal boat, or graze through food stalls at Reffen as evenings stretch late. Sankt Hans bonfires glow across beaches on 23 June, a relaxed night couples and groups savour beside the water.

Fall: Kick through golden leaves in Frederiksberg Gardens, warm up with smorrebrod in snug neighbourhood spots, and browse design fairs and gallery openings as the city settles into hygge. Quieter streets make this a comfortable time for culture lovers and seniors.

Winter: Christmas in Copenhagen lights up Nyhavn and City Hall Square with markets, mulled wine, and spruce-scented stalls, while the Copenhagen Light Festival brightens February nights. Cozy restaurants and elegant hotels suit luxury travellers seeking calm, and shorter queues reward art and history fans.

Year-round, the city hums with recurring highlights like Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July, Distortion’s street parties in early summer, and Copenhagen Pride in August. Foodies time trips for Copenhagen Cooking in late summer and autumn’s Golden Days cultural festival, when venues across town host talks, walks, and performances.
