Traveller reviews in Amsterdam

What an absolutely amazing experience! This tour was wonderful. We were introduced to Dutch history from the founding of the area, the draining of the sea presenting a land that was independent of the monarchies of the time through to the modern time in a conversational way. As we walked through one district after another, it was history of the city, as well as Holland, from it's beginning to today. We saw the buildings on the canals that belonged to the merchants. As a lifelong student of history this

Private grand tour Amsterdam
We had a very good morning with Yvonne, She clearly loves what she does and spent extra time with us at the end of the tour giving us some great recommendations about additional sites to visit and restaurants to try. My husband and I would definitely recommend taking a tour of Amsterdam with Yvonne.

Excellent Amsterdam Food Tour
Family of three spent a terrific day with Pieter. He picked us up at the Sheraton Schiphol and visited Delph (including a walking tour), toured around The Hague, visited Rotterdam (including a walking tour), and were dropped off at the Rotterdam port for our cruise. Pieter was insightful, pleasant, accommodating, and funny. In addition, he was very responsive to all our pre-tour queries. I strongly recommend spending a memorable day with Pieter.

More ways to experience Amsterdam

In the heart of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a city gorgeously marinated in history, culture, and a touch of rebellion. A closer look reveals an intricate blend of bustling canals, cobblestone streets, and tulip-filled gardens that add vibrance to the cityscape. Amid this symphony, you'll find countless things to do in Amsterdam. Stand beneath the tilt of century-old buildings, step into the world of Van Gogh and Vermeer, or cycle through neighbourhoods stippled with quirky cafes. Regardless of the season, Amsterdam keeps its kaleidoscopic essence alive, inviting you to venture deeper and explore more.

Explore Amsterdam off the beaten path

Curious to skip the usual stops? Here are alternative things to do that reveal quieter corners, easy conversations, and small surprises you can walk, ferry, or bike to.

Cultural experiences: Drop into Mezrab in Oost for an evening of storytelling; grab a tea and join the crowd as locals trade true tales and folktales. Across the water, De Ruimte in Noord lines up adventurous jazz most nights, while Bijlmer Parktheater hosts community-driven shows that pull you into Zuidoost’s rhythm.

Small museums and galleries: Tour Museum Het Schip in Spaarndammerbuurt to see bold Amsterdam School architecture; join the short guided visit to a restored worker’s apartment. Duck into Electric Ladyland in the Jordaan, a tiny museum of fluorescent art—book ahead and watch the room change under blacklight. Take the ferry to NDSM and step into Nieuw Dakota for rotating shows by local artists; the staff is happy to chat.

Less crowded scenic viewpoints: Aim for the Pythonbrug in Borneo‑Sporenburg at sunset; the red arc frames quiet docks and mirror-still water. For wide views, linger at the KNSM‑eiland quay as lights come on, or watch the skyline from the OBA library terrace after dusk.

Shop for local products & souvenirs: Browse Ten Katemarkt in Oud‑West late morning for stroopwafels hot off the iron and loose spices you’ll actually use at home. On select weekends, dig through IJ‑Hallen at NDSM; arrive early with cash and a tote, and barter for vintage Dutch tins and enamelware. For edible gifts, stop by Fromagerie Abraham Kef in Oud‑Noord and ask them to vacuum‑seal a wedge of aged farmhouse cheese for the trip.

Popular neighbourhoods

Delving into neighbourhoods uncovers the heart of a city, and Amsterdam is no exception:

Canal Ring: Discover a different shade of Amsterdam city by strolling around the Canal Ring. Popularly known as 'Grachtengordel', Canal Ring shimmers with picturesque Dutch architecture coupled with 17th-century mansions, immaculately lined along the city's prime canals.

Jordaan: Step into a bygone era as you navigate the narrow streets of Jordaan. This old working-class stronghold is now a vibrant enclave boasting quirky shops, eclectic cafes and a buzzing Saturday market showcasing local arts and produce.

De Wallen: Immerse yourself in the lively and unique vibes of De Wallen. Known for its famous Red Light District, this neighbourhood carries a melange of history, nightlife and contemporary art, reflecting the true Dutch spirit.

Museum Quarter: Feed your cultural curiosity in the Museum Quarter. Home to some of the world's most renowned museums like the Van Gogh Museum, it's a treasure trove of Dutch masterpieces and international art, all proudly laying claim to its name.

De Pijp: Celebrate diversity and quirkiness in De Pijp, a lively locale peppered with bohemian boutiques, international cuisines and the captivating open-air market of Albert Cuypmarkt, making it an appealing spot for food enthusiasts and shopaholics alike.

Things to do in Amsterdam by season

Spring: Cycle under budding trees and watch café terraces reappear as tulips colour pocket gardens and canal bridges. Take a lazy boat ride or day trip to nearby bulb fields, then join the citywide orange cheer of King’s Day on April 27. Vondelpark picnics and gentle museum mornings suit families and unhurried travellers.

Summer: Long evenings spill into lively terraces, open-air concerts and swimming spots from Sloterplas to the River IJ. Slip to the North Sea for a breezy afternoon, book a small private boat at sunset that suits couples, or wander neighbourhood festivals that pop up in parks. Pride in August turns the canals into a floating parade of colour and music.

Fall: Leaves gild the canals and a cooler rhythm returns, perfect for gallery browsing, brown café stops and slow canal walks. Open Monumentendag in September unlocks historic interiors, while cultural season openers fill the calendar with performances without the summer bustle.

Winter: Fairy lights lace narrow streets and an ice rink at Museumplein sets the mood for hot chocolate and cosy evenings. The Amsterdam Light Festival illuminates waterways from late November to January, best seen on foot along the quays or from a heated boat. Small holiday markets and shop windows keep the centre festive without the rush.

Circle the big dates: King’s Day each April, Pride Amsterdam in late summer, the Grachtenfestival’s canal concerts in August and the Amsterdam Light Festival through early winter. Culture fans enjoy Uitmarkt in late August and Open Monumentendag in September, while families catch Sinterklaas’s arrival parade in November along the waterways.
